《汉字的秘密》第三集-家人
In ancient China when characters were first invented they were formed from one or more pictographs which either indicated meaning or pronunciation. Pictograph means picture graphic. So we have some characters that have one or more pictographs that alone or in combination indicate a meaning. Sometimes characters will have one part that indicates meaning and another that indicates pronunciation. In some cases it is hard to make up an ideograph, ideograph means idea graphic. Because meaning is not easy to represent in pictographs, they sometimes just borrow another character that has the same pronunciation.

jiā家：From building 宀 and phonetic (also meaning pig) 豕. Meaning house. (note: 豕 pig used to live under the house which were on stilts)
Primitive pictograph (nǚ)女. Womans brests (some think it is a womans hands). Meaning woman. See (mǔ)母 mother
mā妈：From woman 女 and phonetic 马. Meaning mother
jiě姐：From woman 女 and phonetic 且. Meaning elder sister
mèi妹：From woman 女 and phonetic 未. Meaning younger sister
nǎi奶：From woman 女 and phonetic (also meaning breasts) 乃. Meaning milk or grandmather
yí姨：From woman 女 and phonetic 夷. Meaning wife‘s sister
nán男：From field 田 and a man with strength in his arm 力. Meaning a man
yé爷：From person卩 and phonetic 父. Meaning grandfather
bà爸：From father 父 and phonetic 巴. Meaning father
gè哥：Special 哥. From double phonetic 可. Meaning elder brother
dì:弟Primitive pictograph 弟. A string wrapped around a bobin. Meaning younger brother.
shū叔:From hand 又 and phonetic 尗. Original meaning to pick up,now meaning uncle, father's young brother.
bó伯：From person 亻人 and phonetic 白. Meaning father's old brother
